Bodytorque on film

Melbourne-based film duo The Apiary have been busy producing The Australian Ballet’s latest mini doco. Featuring dancers Vivienne Wong and Calvin Hannaford, the doco follows Bodytorque choreographer Alice Topp, and designers Georgia Lazzaro  and Crystal Dunn, as they come together to create a steamy pas de deux. Trace focuses on the elasticity and malleability of everyday undergarments; the dancers carve the air with their limbs and shed the fabric as if it were an extension of their very flesh.

Watch the video, then take a peek at the photo gallery capturing the doco in the making.

    Hi BehindBallet!

I’m a 20 year old dancer who has a very keen interest in choreography. I recently saw the Bodytorque season and was, as ever, incredibly inspired by the quality of work produced. It’s always fantastic to see fresh faces and ideas performed by the world’s best dancers – and what an amazing series of works produced this year!! My favourite was Alice Topp’s ‘Trace’ – genius use of the costumes as a stimulus for Alice’s beautiful, unique movement vocabulary. LOVED it! It’s great to see the increasing popularity of Bodytorque, it has grown out of sight since the first year! And the quality of the works is getting more and more impressive each year too – keep it up! :)

I’d like to enquire about how to potentially become involved with Bodytorque as a choreographer from outside the AB – is this possible? And if you, what do you suggest I do to make my way up onto the big stage? I have choreographed a range of solos, duos and group pieces and am currently working on a contemporary trio, and also majored in Dance Composition for the HSC in 2007.

    Thanks in advance!!
    Alice
